Len Turner - Designer / Maker / Woodturner

1979     Graduated from Tasmanian College of Advanced Education – (Teaching) Majored in Crafts, Design, Science and Technology.

1979-1990        Teacher of Technology, Design, Science and Computing in various schools and colleges in Hobart.

Commenced turning wood in 1979, receiving Arts Council assistance at that time. Specialising in large bowl forms using Tasmanian native species timbers.

1988     First prize, turned objects section, Tasmanian Woodcrafts Exhibition (Forestry Tasmania)

1989     Runner up, turned objects section Tasmanian Woodcrafts Exhibition (Forestry Tasmania)

1990     Selected by L’Unique Galleries, Adelaide as the Tasmanian representative for the gallery’s exhibitions during the Adelaide Festival of Arts, South Australia

1990     Selected to participate in the exhibition of “Tasmania: A designers Environment” at the Axis Gallery, Tokyo, Japan

Feb 1991         Solo Exhibition: “New Directions in Wood” Handmark Galley, Hobart, Tasmania

Jun 1991         Selected to supply work for the Australian Pavilion at Expo 92 in Seville, Spain.

July 1991         Solo Exhibition: “Turning Point”, Design Centre of Tasmania, Launceston

Aug 1991         Works purchased by JETRO (Japanese External Trade Organisation) for inclusion in gift ware trade fair in Tokyo, Japan.

Oct 1991          Invited participant in the inaugural “Forest Impressions” exhibition, Forest Heritage Centre and Gallery, Geeveston, Tasmania’

Feb 1992         Solo exhibition “Tradition Extended” Beaver Galleries Canberra, Australia

Numerous Commissions

Work purchased by Tasmanian Museum and Art Galley for inclusion in their permanent collection.
